Paul Gascoigne has admitted he struggles to watch England matches due to their style of play.
The former Three Lions midfielder made 57 caps but is widely viewed as one of the greatest players the country has ever produced.
However, he’s not always watching the current crop of players, joking he only watched their win over Wales last week because ‘Star Trek was not on’.
Thomas Tuchel’s side cruised to a 3-0 victory at Wembley Stadium in the friendly against their neighbours.
Meanwhile, England are on course to book their place at next summer’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA.
A win away to Latvia on Tuesday, live on talkSPORT, will secure qualification for the finals with two matches to spare.
They still have a long way to go before they can be considered contenders to win the tournament, though, according to Gascoigne.
Asked if he thinks the Three Lions are capable of winning the World Cup, he told White and Jordan: “If the keeper stops having as many touches as the rest of the players, it’s all about passing nowadays.
“I’d love to see a player get the ball and just have a go at him, go on, just two players.”
Gascoigne then agreed with Jim White and Simon Jordan that Cole Palmer is one of the current stars who will pick the ball up and run at defenders.
He also revealed the other England international he is a fan of, adding: “I like (Phil) Foden, he’s a heavy little goer. I like him.”
The 58-year-old continued by admitting he does not always enjoy watching football, even if England are playing.
AFPTuchel’s side are not yet contenders for next summer’s World Cup, says Gascoigne[/caption]He explained: “We’ve got quite a few individual players but, I mean, I watched them the other night and I didn’t think there was any Star Trek on, so I decided to watch the England game.”
Asked why this was the case, Gascoigne added: “I think it’s just because I’ve played. Like I said, some of the stuff I did on the pitch and I’m thinking, ‘how did I do that?’
“You look at some of the players and I’m thinking just have a go, you know it’s as little as five minutes to go.
“Just have a go and they’re just keeping it at the back and it winds me up and I can’t hack it.”
Gascoigne’s playing career saw him feature for the likes of Newcastle, Tottenham and Rangers.
Meanwhile, he starred for the Three Lions at both the 1990 World Cup and Euro 1996.
Foden and Palmer have the ability to excite Gascoigne when he watches the Three LionsGettyGascoigne on Rashford
Although he has been impressed by Palmer and Foden’s attitude for England, Gascoigne had a piece of advice for one of their international teammates.
Marcus Rashford has re-established himself in the side under Tuchel having impressed on loan at Aston Villa last season and Barcelona this term.
However, Gascoigne wants to see the Manchester United academy graduate smile more when he is playing.
He explained: “I like Rashford. I just wish he would smile now and again. It winds me up.
“Like when you score, smile at least, because you’ve got a bloke that’s got three kids and he takes them to the match.
“It costs a lot of money. They all want England shirts. It costs money. They want food. It costs money.
Gascoigne has urged Rashford to ‘have fun’ and smile more on the pitchGetty“Then he probably gets home about three or four o’clock in the morning after driving home, but the players are back home at half eleven getting massive wages.
“If you’re going to score, please at least celebrate. Have fun.”
Rashford scored on his England debut aged just 18 against Australia back in 2016.
He has gone on to win 65 caps for the Three Lions, with his goal tally now standing at 18.
The most recent of those strikes came during their 5-0 thrashing of Serbia in World Cup qualifying last month.
