Sir Tony Blair will join Donald Trump and Sir Keir Starmer at the Middle East peace summit in Egypt on Monday as he prepares to play a prominent role in post-war Gaza, The i Paper can reveal.
The former prime minister will be on Trump’s Board of Peace despite objections to the appointment by Hamas, it is understood.
On Sunday Blair received the crucial backing for his involvement in governance of the war-torn territory from the vice president of the Palestinian Authority – who are seen as pivotal in representing ordinary Palestinians as Hamas retreats from Gaza.
It follows opposition to the appointment by a senior Hamas official, who said Blair’s historic role in the Middle East, including the war in Iraq, should exclude him from the post.
The ex-prime minister, who is also a former Middle East envoy to the international community, will join Starmer, the US president and other world leaders at the historic signing of the Gaza peace deal at the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit on Monday, sources close to Blair said.
Blair to play ‘prominent role’
And Middle East insiders said Blair is expected to play a “prominent role” in the post-Hamas governance plan for Gaza despite criticism from the terrorist group about his proposed appointment.
Diplomatic sources said that while Hamas are negotiating the next phase of the peace deal after the release of hostages, there is no role for Hamas in Gaza post-war.
An insider said that if Trump wanted Blair to be on the Board of Peace, then “he will be there”.
It is understood that, despite Hamas officials’ public objections, the question of non-Hamas Palestinian representation is much more important to the militant group.
Backing for Blair from the Palestinian Authority
Blair met Hussein Al Sheikh, vice president of the Palestinian Authority, for talks about post-Hamas governance in Gaza.
Al Sheikh gave the former prime minister his backing, saying he was ready to “work with President, Trump, Mr Blair” and others on keeping the ceasefire in Gaza in place.
The PA vice president wrote on X: “Today I met with Mr. Tony Blair to discuss the day after the war and efforts aimed at making President Trump’s plan which aims at stopping the war and establishing lasting peace in the region a success.
