‘Snooker from the gods’ – Shaun Murphy almost breaks stunning Ronnie O’Sullivan record at Xi’an Grand Prix

Shaun Murphy delivered what he described as ‘one of the best’ performances in his career to decimate Kyren Wilson.

Murphy whitewashed Wilson 5-0 in their last-16 clash at the Xi’an Grand Prix.

But the score didn’t quite tell just how utterly dominant Murphy’s display was.

Against Wilson, last year’s world champion, Murphy came agonisingly close to setting the record for scoring the most unanswered points in snooker history.

What record did Murphy almost broke?

Murphy, dubbed ‘The Magician’, piled on a staggering 533 points without reply from Wilson.

The absurd tally of unanswered points placed him third on the all-time list.

Ronnie O’Sullivan boasts the record having scored 556 unanswered points against Ricky Walden at the 2014 Masters, while Stuart Bingham sits second on the leaderboard with 547 against Sam Baird at the 2016 China Open.

Murphy could and perhaps should have had the record all to himself, but he opted against it.

In the final frame, ‘The Magician’ snookered himself on the last red and chose to snick the pink, handing Wilson the only points he gained all match.

Wilson’s brother, Taylor, remarked to The Sun that Murphy’s performance was ‘snooker from the gods’ and ‘form that deserves trophies.’

As for Murphy, he struggled to hide his jubilation after the victory but was still surprised he managed to perform at the level he did.

“That’s pretty much as good as I’ve ever played,” Murphy said.

“I think that’s one of the best best-of-nine matches I’ve ever been a part of.

“It’s mad, you play so many matches around the world for all your life, and every now and again it comes together, all the hours of practice from being a child, it all comes together on one little session, and you have a burst like that.

“Of course, the greats – Ronnie O’Sullivan, the John Higgins’, the Mark Williams’ – have been doing it for years, every now and again, people like me do it a little bit.

“It was great today. I knew I had to play well against Kyren. He’s a great champion, the defending champion here, but I didn’t expect to play that well.”

Commenting on Murphy’s utter dominance, TNT Sports commentator David Hendon remarked: “No record, but what an extraordinary performance.

“Kyren Wilson was completely shut out. He didn’t get a look-in the whole match until that foul at the end. They’re the only points he scored, an extraordinary display from Shaun Murphy.

Wilson narrowly avoided being on the wrong side of snooker historyGetty

“The British Open champion, hoping to win back-to-back ranking events, he’s in a golden spell of form.”

Murphy, the 15th seed, faces Chinese star Ding Junhui in the quarter-finals.
