Shannon Sharpe slams criticism of Deion Sanders and Michael Irvin amid Cowboys legend’s furious rant

NFL legend Michael Irvin is deeply offended by the criticism of the era of football he and Deion Sanders both played in.

Irvin and Sanders were members of the Dallas Cowboys dynasty in the 1990s and won Super Bowl XXX together in 1996.

Irvin enraged at criticism of NFL in the 1990s

Irvin launched a furious defense of his and Sanders’ era on his YouTube channel after reacting to a clip from the Facts over Feelings podcast.

The hosts in the podcast took a subtle dig at the NFL legends of the 1980s and 1990s by questioning if they could handle the talent of today’s league.

When speaking about Sanders specifically, the host suggested that the now Colorado Buffaloes head coach was “an alien or somebody from the future that was dropped off in the wrong time” –essentially suggesting that he was a supreme athlete against weaker competition compared to today’s crop.

“Are you s—ting me?,” Irvin, who has visited Sanders in the hospital during his recent health battles, said.

“We are the two most accomplished receivers in the history of this game when you’re talking about the most important thing is championships.

“And your stupid a** talking about running fast, like people weren’t running fast back then. Are you s–tting me?”

    Shannon Sharpe backs Irvin

Fellow NFL legend Shannon Sharpe reacted to Irvin’s passionate rant and backed the former receiver.

Sharpe claimed that players in the 1990s were just as far as those today, pointing out that some of his contemporaries won medals in the Olympics in various race categories.

“Ron Brown got a gold medal, Sam Graddy got a gold medal, and James Jett got a gold medal,” Sharpe began on his Nightcap podcast.

Irvin and Sanders are widely considered two of the best ever Cowboys playersGetty Shannon Sharpe dismissed the idea that players of the past wouldn’t compete in today’s era@NightCap

“I wanna know the current players that are currently playing right now that got a gold medal.

“I wanna know which of these players now think they are faster than Ron Brown or Sam Graddy.

“You can’t discount them when you didn’t see these guys from back then.”

Comparison of eras is something that happens across all sports.

Often the same conclusion is drawn, that players of the past would struggle in the current era as a result of athletes naturally becoming stronger and faster, not to mention the development in sports science and medicine.

However, it can also be said that had Irvin and Sanders been exposed to the same training, nutrition and workouts that today’s players have access to, they would be even more deadly.

Furthermore, the NFL in general was a lot more dangerous during Irvin’s era.

The space offered to them when running was a lot less than what is given now, meaning they could have set even faster times.

The current NFL is certainly a more pass-friendly league, and Irvin had 1,500-plus receiving yards when it more of a run-first league.

Ultimately, the two Hall of Famers shouldn’t get too worked up by such comments, considering the success they enjoyed in their respective careers.

Irvin is a three-time Super Bowl champion, while Sanders is a two-time champion.

Furthermore, Sanders, whose son Sheduer is now in the NFL, is a six-time First Team All-Pro and has eight-Pro Bowl appearances. He was also named the Defensive Player of the Year in 1994.

Irvin was selected as a First-Team All-Pro in 1991 and has five Pro Bowl appearances.
