Martin Brundle had a case of mistaken identity during his latest grid walk, and in fairness, you can see why.
The Formula 1 icon was doing his usual pre-race duties at the Singapore Grand Prix when he thought he’d spotted Scottish megastar Lewis Capaldi.
“Lewis, wonderful to see you,” the former Williams and McLaren driver said, and even some at home may not have realised his error.
“I’m his brother!” Anthony Capaldi replied, with Lewis then bouncing onto the scene.
Laughing, Brundle said: “You’re his brother! Sorry, they told me he had a cap on!”
The trio then exchanged pleasantries, with Lewis explaining is Anthony the F1 and McLaren supporter, but he’s a ‘big fan’ of Brundle’s work.
Yet when he tried to thank the former driver for his time, Brundle was already off hunting for his next interviewee.
“Lovely to see you man, thank you so much,” Lewis said, holding out his hand.
“I’ll hold that then!” he said, grabbing his own hand, cracking up himself and his brother.
What happened in the Singapore Grand Prix?
Despite the pre-race awkwardness, Anthony certainly had a good weekend as his McLaren team clinched the constructors’ championship with six races still to go in a race won by Mercedes’ George Russell.
The British-New Zealand squad have now won back-to-back team titles for the first time since 1991 when they were in their pomp.
Now all attention turns to the drivers’ title, which will almost certainly be between their two competitors.
Lewis ended up shaking his own handSky McLaren took the constructors while Norris finished third and further closed the title gap to PiastriAFPOscar Piastri maintained his championship lead over Lando Norris in Singapore, but saw it reduced once again, dropping down to 22 points.
The Australian started the race in third and had a decent advantage with his teammate down in fifth.
However, Norris mastered the first two corners of the Marina Bay circuit and was alongside Piastri heading into turn three, where he then found the back of Max Verstappen’s car.
Hitting the back of the Red Bull, he snapped his steering wheel right, then collided with Piastri, pushing him even further behind.
Piastri was initially annoyed on team radio, saying: “That wasn’t very team like, but sure.”
McLaren have switched their drivers already this season when a switch of positions was deemed unfair, but on this occasion they informed Piastri no such call would be made.
Norris snapped into Piastri and sent his teammate back“That’s not fair. I’m sorry that’s not fair,” he said.
“If he has to crash into his teammate to avoid another car that’s a pretty s*** job of avoiding.”
What did Norris and Piastri say?
Giving his version of events post-race, Norris said: “It was slippery, it was still wet in a lot of places.
“But it’s racing, I put it on the inside. I had a small correction but nothing more than that.
“I wish I could’ve given it a little bit more, there were more overtaking opportunities today but I felt like I did everything I could.”
Speaking in the media pen, Piastri tried to change the subject to the constructors’ title.
Norris has taken three points off Piastri in back-to-back racesGetty“I just want to say it was a great night for the whole team,” he said.
“Tonight is a culmination of a lot of hard work over not just this year, but lots of years. It’s a great proud moment for me to be a part of that and a proud member of it.”
Asked if he agrees with team CEO that McLaren race hard but fair, he continued: “Yes, I think we do.
“I don’t think there was any intention of contact, but there was. I need to look at the replay and see what effect it had.
“I’ve not seen the incident. I need to look at that first before I make a statement.
“I think just take the learnings from this weekend and see what can be improved. I think the weekend as a whole was generally very good.
“The practice went well, qualifying went well. The race, maybe a little bit slow to get going, but the rest of the race was pretty good.”
