The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced the news on Sunday night during the Green Bay Packers‘ 40-40 tie with the Dallas Cowboys.
The 31-year-old Grammy-award winning rapper and singer-songwriter — born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio in Puerto Rico — released a statement celebrating his achievement.
He said: “What I’m feeling goes beyond myself. It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown… this is for my people, my culture, and our history. Ve y dile a tu abuela, que seremos el HALFTIME SHOW DEL SUPER BOWL. (Go and tell grandma that we will be the HALFTIME SHOW of the Super Bowl).”
Roc Nation founder Jay-Z said in a statement that what Bad Bunny has “done and continues to do for Puerto Rico is truly inspiring. We are honored to have him on the world’s biggest stage.”
Sunday’s announcement will be disappointing news for Swifties, who were no doubt hoping to the see Tay Tay perform on the grandest stage of all.
The Super Bowl halftime show is widely regarded as the world’s biggest concert stage, watched every year by hundreds of millions globally.
Recent performers have included Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, Usher, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Eminem, while British singer Adele was recently linked with next year’s show.

According to NBC affiliate WCNC, part of that deal would include Swift retaining ownership of the performance footage, much like the way she’s fought to regain control of her music masters.
However, according to the report, the NFL ‘flatly refused’ her demand.
“She knows the kind of ratings she brings, the global attention she commands. She wasn’t about to hand that over for free,” the industry source said. “Taylor Swift doesn’t need exposure. She wanted a deal that reflected her value.”
Speculation about Swift finally playing the Super Bowl intensified last month after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell appeared on the ‘Today’ show.
“We would always love to have Taylor play. She is a special, special talent, and obviously she would be welcome at any time,” Goodell said, when asked if Swift has been invited to play.
“Is it in the works?” host Savannah Guthrie asked.
“I can’t tell you anything about it,” Goodell replied.
