I will be the first to flaunt my unique and absolutely invigorating college admissions essay topic — the thesaurus. While out of context it may sound boring, I quite masterfully used the thesaurus as a vessel to guide any college admissions worker through my journey of moving away from a small town and toward my ultimate acceptance of all aspects of myself, including my sexuality.
The essay, on a deeper level, tackled how to acknowledge, respect and graciously welcome diversity into our lives — a skill that is so easy to lose without practice in today’s world.
While this essay awarded me acceptance into almost twenty different schools, the Capstone is where I knew I was meant to be. When I announced that news, I received some scrutiny for the hypocrisy of my essay topic and the stigma surrounding the University and the South itself. I immediately rejected any notion of this argument, but deep down I was also scared of what stepping onto campus meant for me.
Now, as a seasoned sophomore, I am here to present a guide on how to get involved while still embracing every aspect of yourself.
To start, finding organizations to join is the perfect way to find your group. While chaotic, Get On Board Day is a great way to discover new groups. There are four main categories of groups that will have tables there: the future career groups, the recreation groups, special interest groups and affinity groups.
As I strolled through the Quad, filled with tables and students looking for involvement, I knew that the University’s social scene went underappreciated. For the first time, I saw Alabama beyond sports and Greek life, as a school with 40,000 people all looking for their community.
The next best piece of advice follows a major college cliche: Say yes to everything. Everyone is looking to find their group in the first couple weeks of college, and despite what your freshman mind is telling you, this isn’t “Mean Girls;” this is college, and no one will judge you for trying to make some friends.
Speaking from direct experience, I had to make a Mean Girls reference because of the scene at the mall where all the characters start acting like jungle animals and attacking one another. That scene is what walking into Lakeside Dining for the first time feels like — it’s crowded and there’s a ton of options, but when you take a closer look, there are people sitting alone just waiting to make some friends.
The most crucial advice you can get is don’t be afraid to be proud of yourself and who you are. Last year, in the midst of recent legislation targeting diversity, equity and inclusion, people and organizations alike had to navigate what proud and diverse group events would look like, but they exceeded expectations and came together in a beautiful way. From the QSA’s “Shantay, UA!”, to the Black Student Union’s “Onyx” celebration, groups still found a way to be proud and share their messages and community.
Seeing these celebrations and how tight-knit a community can become in the face of adversity just confirmed that the Capstone was where I was meant to be. As I ramp up for my sophomore year, these three pieces of advice stay with me, as there is always time to get involved in new things and find new friends.
Despite the comments from my friends back home, the lessons I learned in my freshman year have kept powering me to be the most inimitable, idiosyncratic and eclectic version of myself. And yes, the thesaurus taught me some of those words.
