Daniel Dubois must impose his heavyweight size on Oleksandr Usyk and use his jab to push him onto the back foot.
That’s according to Lennox Lewis, the last British boxer to hold the undisputed heavyweight crown, who believes Dubois can replicate his historical success in rematches by bringing it to Usyk at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night.
Lewis overcame defeats on more than one occasion during his legendary career in the ring.
‘The Lion’ avenged his first defeat in the squared circle to Oliver McCall in 1994 by stopping the American three years later to regain the vacant WBC title.
He then embarked on an eight-fight win streak, on either side of a split-decision draw with Evander Holyfield, before tasting his second career loss to Hasim Rahman in a major South African upset.
However, Lewis overcame adversity once again and stopped ‘The Rock’ seven months later when they contested a rematch in Las Vegas to reclaim his unified throne.
The defeats have clear parallels with what Dubois is attempting to achieve this weekend when he rematches Usyk in London.
It was only two years ago when the Brit suffered a defeat to Usyk in Poland, but Lewis believes there is a clear path to victory for ‘Triple D,’ who he says has the potential to go down as one of the greatest to ever do it by winning at Wembley.
“If it were me, I would say starting first and finishing last is very important and going after Oleksandr,” Lewis told talkSPORT on Friday.
“He’s not a true heavyweight, so I would bring my heavyweight size onto him and push him back to the ropes and hit him with my jab.
“I’ve got an arsenal filled with punches I can throw any given moment, and so does Daniel.
“He can throw that uppercut, he can throw that hook, he can throw that right hand, so he’s just got to use those weapons that he has.”
Lewis said Dubois must go after Usyk and push him back to the ropes with his jabGetty/Leigh Dawney/QueensberryLewis then praised the ‘great corner’ Dubois has by his side, emphasising how vital his team will be when he steps into the ring on Saturday night.
He feels ‘pretty positive’ that the young Brit can go out and put on an upset against Ukraine’s undisputed heavyweight champion.
“[Dubois is] a lot better,” he added.
“This is not the same Daniel Dubois coming into the ring. He’s been in there, inches away from the title, and now he has another chance…
“I think Daniel needs to impose himself straight away, because Usyk’s going to try and move around, and be slippery.
“He can’t make a guy move around and be slippery, you’ve got to force him to a corner, force him to the ropes, force him to exchange with you and hopefully that you come out on top.”
Lewis says Dubois must force Usyk into the ropes and force him to exchangeLeigh Dawney/QueensberryLewis’ 1999 rematch victory over Holyfield saw him become boxing’s undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
Now, he understands exactly what’s at stake for Dubois this weekend — and his parting message to ‘Triple D’ is enough to send shivers down even the most casual boxing fan’s spine.
“It would mean a lifetime of work and dedication would have all been worth it,” he concluded, giving his final prediction for the fight.
“If the fight doesn’t go the distance, I would say Daniel Dubois; if it goes the distance, Oleksandr Usyk.
“This is a life-changing fight for Daniel Dubois, and this is the fight he’s been searching for for such a long time.
“He’s been through his trials and tribulations – now he’s at the front door.
“All he has to do is go through it. All he has to do is kick down the front door.”
