The Daniel Dubois vs Oleksandr Usyk rivalry will continue this weekend, two years on from a famous row over a controversial low blow.
The heavyweight pair will do battle for the second time at Wembley Stadium – but this time for the undisputed world titles and a place in history.
Dubois is motivated by redemption and frustration with their rivalry having heated up during fight week proceedings this time around.
And that is largely down to a huge debate over a controversial low blow – which sparked a furious reaction from many in the boxing world.
The pair met in front of a partisan Usyk favouring crowd in Poland with Dubois having it all to do.
Usyk had beaten Anthony Joshua twice, and many believed he was truly invincible in the heavyweight division.
‘The Cat’ had only ever lost in the amateurs, but a chink in his armour appeared to show for the first time.
Dubois was boxing well and trying his best to keep up with the elite operator in Usyk going through the early stages.
But in the fifth round, a booming shot to Usyk’s body sent the champion crumbling to the ground holding his midriff.
The referee Stanley Mitchell was in a great position and judged the shot to have been below the belt.
The shot was contentious and Usyk was given several minutes to recover from the shot, having had the wind taken out of him.
Dubois was stunned by the referee’s ruling and couldn’t believe his luck, as the crowd watched in suspense silence.
What is a low blow?
A low blow is a punch below the waist line of the shorts in the sport of boxing.
The line of the belt is normally determined by the referee in line with their hips at the beginning of the contest.
If a fighter punches below the belt, it is ruled illegal and fighters can be given time to recover.
Penalties of points on the judges’ scorecards can also be given if repetitive or in severe cases.
He wasn’t deducted a point and no further action was taken, but those around the ring were furious including Dubois’ camp.
Having been given substantial time to catch his breath, Usyk was able to recover.
And ultimately ‘Dynamite’ ran out of steam, which saw him unable to punish Usyk and capitalise on the powerful shot.
He found himself subsequently stopped by a later barrage in the ninth round, but was left aggrieved at the final bell.
In the post-fight interview, he simply remarked: “I think that landed and I’ve been cheated out of victory tonight. What else can I say?”
Promoter Frank Warren then added to talkSPORT at the time: “He won that, if he had been allowed to carry on, he would have won. We will appeal this. It’s a liberty.”
Dubois was handed his second ever defeat, and his shock was visibleAn appeal over the low blow was unsuccessful, with Usyk’s victory standing the test of trial.
But the boxing world spoke out in their numbers to voice their opinion on if the shot was truly below the border.
To this day, it remains a debate and Dubois’ trainer Don Charles even resurfaced the row.
He accused Usyk of ‘cheating’ which has added yet another new layer to this heavyweight rivalry.
Everyone has a voice on exactly what unfolded, but Dubois has now got his chance to get what he believes is justice.
Of course, the officials will now be extra cautious in their sequel and the Briton will likely once again attack the body, which he feels is a point of vulnerability.
