Bayern Munich legend Thomas Muller continues to be linked with an MLS switch, and now we have some clues with which side.
The record 13-time Bundesliga winner will be departing his lifelong team following the Club World Cup as they decided against offering him a new contract.
The 35-year-old hasn’t given any hints on his next destination, keeping the possibility of retirement as a one-club man open.
However, his countryman and Philadelphia Union sporting director Ernst Tanner has now spilled the beans that Muller could be heading Stateside.
“I’ve already been offered Thomas Muller,” he said.
“I still have a good relationship with Thomas’ advisors. But from a financial perspective, that’s absolutely unthinkable for us.
“We’re a training club, and every year we have the second-to-last budget. You also have to think a little about the team.
“When someone suddenly earns much more than everyone else, you wonder why you’re even there.
“A big name like Thomas Muller needs to go to a club that suits him. Clubs like Los Angeles, New York, and Inter Miami with Lionel Messi would be possible options.”
A move to Miami would see two of the Champions League’s greatest ever players paired up, with Muller’s last European performance for Bayern seeing him equal Messi on 163 for the third-most in the competition’s history.
Muller also has the record for the most appearances for a single team, while his 21 league assists in 2019/20 are the joint most ever in a big five league season along with Messi.
Yet Muller has another record that would make a potential link-up an awkward one.
Messi could potentially welcome old foe Muller to FloridaGetty Messi was given the worst night of his career against Muller in 2020Getty - PoolIn August 2020 Muller was Man of the Match for Bayern as they inflicted Barcelona’s heaviest-ever defeat in Europe of 8-2.
The Bavarian forward scored twice and added an assist, taking his tally of goals against Barca to six, also the most in the competition’s history.
Speaking post-match, teammate Gerard Pique said: “We have hit rock bottom. This is not the first, nor the second, nor the third time. We are not on the right path.
“Coaches and players follow one another, but it has been several years since we have been able to be competitive on a European level.”
Messi later admitted the worst defeat of his career was one of the reasons he left the club in 2021, while a book about Pep Guardiola called ‘Deu salvi el Pep’ claimed Messi called him shortly after to try and force a move to Manchester City.
Muller, meanwhile, has briefly discussed his MLS links while playing in America.
Media speculation suggests Muller is favouring an MLS switchGettyHe was asked about protests in Los Angeles in response to Donald Trump’s deportations and gave a thoughtful response.
“Of course you notice it,” he said. “If one were to allow political, fundamental world events to flow into one’s daily actions, if one were not able to separate things, it would be difficult.
“You notice things, you think about things. It’s not just about what you mentioned; the whole world’s events are always nerve-wracking.
“Information is shared quickly and globally, you get a lot of information, and a lot of it isn’t all that rosy. Everyone probably struggles with that.
“As I said, I try to separate things. It’s not just about the specific issue that was being discussed. We’re in the same situation in Germany. From regional politics to riots to what happened yesterday in Austria something is constantly happening in the world.
“Perception is good, reflection is also good, drawing conclusions for yourself about how you want to move through the world: that’s completely clear. But I don’t see a direct connection to my future plans.”
