Ajuri Ngelale steps down as Tinubu’s spokesman over health issues

Ajuri Ngelale announce  stepping down as the spokesman for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu due to health issues has significant implications for the administration's communication strategy. Ngelale, who assumed this pivotal role amid a politically charged environment, played a crucial part in shaping public perception and articulating government policies. His decision to resign underscores the often-overlooked human aspect of political roles, where personal well-being can intersect with professional responsibilities.

This development raises questions about the continuity and effectiveness of the communication strategies employed by Tinubu's administration. A spokesperson serves not only as a mouthpiece for governmental initiatives but also as a bridge between the government and the citizenry. As such, Ngelale’s departure could create a temporary void that may hinder timely dissemination of information regarding key policies and initiatives. The challenge will be to appoint an equally competent successor who can maintain the momentum in governmental communication while addressing any potential public concerns arising from this transition.

The presidency has been shopping for an experienced and competent media professional to replace Mr Ngelale in the past weeks. Administration insiders say the journalist has so far failed to demonstrate sufficient capacity to effectively deliver on the job.

Mr Ngelale held two key positions simultaneously – special adviser to the president on media and publicity and special presidential envoy on climate action/ chairman, Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.

Femi Adesina, Ngelale’s predecessor as official spokesperson of the President, spent eight full years in office. Reuben Abati, who occupied that position before Adesina spent four years in office, hence some persons were surprised over why Ngelale stepped aside in a little over a year.

In his announcement, Ngelale predicated his indefinite leave of absence on “medical matters presently affecting my immediate, nuclear family”.

Nairametrics previously reported that following the announcement on May 19, 2024, Ngelale was mandated to lead this initiative as part of a larger presidential committee, chaired by President Tinubu himself.

The established Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions is responsible for coordinating and overseeing all policies and programs related to climate action and green economic development.

The committee comprises notable figures from various sectors, including government officials, CEOs of institutions, and representatives from key ministries.
