USGS: 4.9 magnitude earthquake hits Barstow area, rattling large swath of SoCal

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recently reported a 4.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the Barstow area, generating significant tremors felt across a large portion of Southern California. This seismic event, occurring in a region known for its geological activity, serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with living in an area characterized by tectonic instability. The earthquake's epicenter was located near Barstow, a city situated along the San Andreas Fault system, which is notorious for producing significant seismic events.

Seismologists have long studied the implications of such earthquakes on urban infrastructure and public safety. A magnitude of 4.9 may not seem catastrophic when compared to larger earthquakes; however, it can still cause damage to buildings and infrastructure if they are not designed to withstand seismic forces. The potential for secondary effects such as aftershocks further exacerbates concerns among residents and local authorities alike. Emergency response protocols must be reviewed and updated continuously to ensure preparedness for future seismic activities.

The shaking was felt as far west as the Los Angeles area, including Burbank, Pasadena and Studio City. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in the LA area. The Los Angeles Fire Department said it has not been placed on earthquake mode.

Dr. Lucy Jones, seismologist, commented on X that earthquakes of this size have been seen "many times in the Mojave Desert."

She explained that this location is near the Calico fault, which crosses the Mojave. "It is more than 50 km from the Calico-Hidalgo fault zone  so it will not change the probability of a San Andreas earthquake," Jones said on X.

A smattering of folks in the Las Vegas valley reported feeling the quake on social media, including Brian Kip, who said, “Just felt an earthquake in Las Vegas!”

Michael Rutchland felt it as well, saying, “An earthquake just hit us while driving our Tesla to Las Vegas in the desert. Tesla FSD saved us from injury.”

KTLA reported that the quake was followed by several significant aftershocks measuring 3.5 and 2.7. Reports indicate that the impact was felt across a wide swath of Southern California, including metropolitan Los Angeles.

Renown seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones weighed in on X, saying that the temblor was located near the Calico fault - which crosses the Mojave.

"We have seen quakes this size many times in the Mojave Desert," she posted, adding that because Monday's quake was more than 50 km from the San Andreas fault, it will not change the probability of a San Andreas earthquake.
