It is with great sadness that the entertainment industry mourns the loss of Shannen Doherty, a talented actress known for her iconic roles in 'Beverly Hills, 90210' and 'Charmed.' Doherty passed away at the age of 53 after a long battle with breast cancer. Her untimely death has left fans and colleagues devastated, as she was not only a beloved actress but also a strong advocate for cancer awareness and research.
Throughout her career, Shannen Doherty captivated audiences with her compelling performances and undeniable on-screen presence. Her portrayal of Brenda Walsh in 'Beverly Hills, 90210' solidified her as a household name in the 1990s, while her role as Prue Halliwell in 'Charmed' showcased her versatility as an actress. Doherty's ability to bring depth and emotion to her characters made her a standout talent in Hollywood.
Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, Variety reported. She announced she had gone into remission in 2017, only for the cancer to return a few years later.
"The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace," Sloane continued.
The Beverly Hills 90210 star was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and spoke candidly to PEOPLE in November 2023 about her Stage 4 breast cancer, which had by then spread to her bones, saying at the time that she didn't "want to die."
“I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating. I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better,” she told PEOPLE. "I’m just not — I’m not done.”
By friends’ accounts, though, Doherty mellowed in middle age. She would reprise her signature role of Brenda Walsh twice: for an extended guest-starring turn on the 2008 reboot “90210” and in a 2019 dramedy, “BH90210,” in which the original cast returned to play fictional versions of themselves as they attempted to revisit their hit show.
“It was not only that was she never able to escape the gravitational pull of that role, but that she kept going back to it of her own free will,” Thompson said.
She is the second major cast member from “Beverly Hills, 90210” to die young: Luke Perry died in March 2019 due to complications from a stroke.
