Ohio Primary Election: Trump-endorsed Senate candidate Bernie Moreno wins

In the recent Ohio primary election, Bernie Moreno emerged victorious as the Republican candidate for Senate, with a resounding endorsement from former President Donald Trump. Moreno's win signifies a shift in the political landscape, as he aligns himself closely with Trump's policies and vision for America. The businessman and entrepreneur ran a campaign centered on conservative values and promises to bring change to Washington.

Moreno's victory has sparked both excitement and controversy within the Republican party, with some praising his outsider status and business acumen, while others question his ability to navigate the complex world of politics. As he prepares to face off against Democratic incumbent Senator Tim Ryan in the general election, Moreno will need to continue to rally support from both his base and moderate voters in order to secure a win.

Yet his Democratic opponent, Sen. Sherrod Brown responded Tuesday night to Moreno's win posting on social media saying, "The choice ahead of Ohio is clear: Bernie Moreno has spent his career and campaign putting himself first, and would do the same if elected."

The general election fight is expected to be at least as fierce in a state that has trended Republican in recent years. With Democrats holding a tenuous 51-49 voting majority in the Senate but defending more seats than Republicans, Brown’s seat is expected to be a top GOP target. He is the lone Democrat holding a non-judicial statewide office in Ohio, a state that has moved steadily to the right during the Trump era.

In a move that drew bipartisan rebukes, Senate Majority PAC, an independent group aligned with Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, spent $2.7 million to elevate Moreno’s primary bid, with the idea that he would be the weakest against Brown this fall.

Ohio Republican primary voters’ embrace of Trump’s worldview goes beyond their support for the candidate he endorsed. Roughly 8 in 10 said they approved of Trump’s job performance when he was in the White House, with close to two-thirds saying they expect that, if he returns to the Oval Office, a second Trump term would be better than his first. About two-thirds also said they’d consider Trump fit for office even if he’s convicted of a crime. And only about 3 in 10 acknowledged that President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election was legitimate.

Ohioans “know that Bernie Moreno always looks out for himself,” Brown said in an interview with MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell Tuesday night.

He alluded to Moreno’s deep pockets, saying “we’ll be outspent, but we’ll out-organize.”

A super PAC aligned with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had signaled Moreno was Democrats’ preferred pick for Brown to take on when it dropped some $3 million in the race to boost Moreno.
