First Time in Nine Years Tracy Chapman Performs ‘Fast Car’ at 2024 Grammys

Caitlin Clark, the sensational freshman guard for the Iowa Hawkeyes, delivered a jaw-dropping performance in her team's recent victory over the Maryland Terrapins. Scoring an astonishing 38 points, Clark showcased her exceptional skills and solidified her place as one of the most promising talents in women's college basketball.

From the opening tip-off, it was evident that Clark was determined to make a statement. Her relentless energy and unwavering focus propelled her to dominate every aspect of the game. Whether it was sinking three-pointers from beyond the arc or driving fearlessly to the basket, she seemed unstoppable.

The country singer and the singer-songwriter, 59, then took the stage to perform their own rendition of Chapman’s 1988 hit song during the ceremony at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The televised performance marked Chapman's first since singing on Late Night with Seth Myers in 2020. She last toured in 2009.

Taylor Swift and Brandi Carlile were seen standing during the performance and the entire audience gave the pair a standing ovation at the conclusion of the song.

Dressed all in black, Chapman kicked off her performance at the Grammys playing the iconic first few bars on her guitar, sparking voracious cheers from the star-studded audience which included Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson. Chapman and Combs bounced back and forth sharing the spotlight and but sang together in beautiful harmony for the chorus. After they finished, the crowd leapt to their feet in a thunderous applause. Oprah raised her hands cheering and host Trevor Noah raced to the stage to again pay tribute to Chapman. “The legendary Tracy Chapman, everybody,” Noah said, “Thank you so much for that! Thank you so much for that.”

Chapman was just 24 years old when the song came out, and PEOPLE described it at the time as "a female companion piece to one of Springsteen’s bucket-seat sagas."

"Fast Car" was the lead single off Tracy Chapman, and it received a massive boost after Chapman performed it at the Mandela concert at Wembley Stadium in London. Then a relatively unknown artist, she was added to the bill at the last minute after Stevie Wonder dropped out.
