Charlotte Hornets big man Kai Jones, who is currently away from the team, took to social media on Monday afternoon to issue a public trade request in his latest social media incident this offseason. "I have officially requested to be traded from the Charlotte Hornets.Jones wrote.
The Hornets announced last week that the 6-foot-11 forward/center would not join the team for training camp following some bizarre behavior on social media, including a mostly indecipherable video on Instagram Live and other criticism of teammates on X.
“Kai Jones will not participate in training camp due to personal reasons,” the Hornets’ statement read. “There is currently not a timetable for his return to the team. Out of respect for the personal nature of the situation, the Hornets will not have any additional public comment regarding the matter at this time.”
Jones has averaged 2.7 points and two rebounds in 67 career games with Charlotte.
Kai Jones has spent the last several months posting some bizarre videos on Instagram and has crossed the line too many times when it comes to calling out his teammates on Twitter.
With Mark Williams proving to be the Hornets' answer as a rookie and the improvement as Nick Richards serving as the backup, Jones was expected to see limited action once again this season in Charlotte
Jones made a series of bizarre social media posts this summer, some calling out teammates. One was a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) where Jones suggested he was a better player than Charlotte star LaMelo Ball or No. 2 pick Brandon Miller, and said he could beat one-on-one. Jones then criticized teammate Mark Williams, the Hornets center who starts ahead of him.
In a vacuum, Jones might have some value because the new collective bargaining agreement has placed an even higher premium on team-friendly rookie deals. He's due to make $3 million this year and has a $4.7 million club option for 2024-25 before he's eligible to hit restricted free agency in 2025.
But teams that may otherwise have been interested in a trade might be put off by what has transpired off the court this fall.

Jones could be subject to a fine or suspension for publicly requesting a trade, based on the current collective bargaining agreement, which states, "Any player (or, for clarity, any player representative or person acting with authority on behalf of a player) who publicly expresses a desire to be traded to another Team shall be subject to a fine and/or a suspension. The maximum fine that may be imposed by the NB on a player pursuant to the foregoing shall be $150,000."
