A vegetation fire that started near Highway 253 a few miles west of Ukiah Friday afternoon was quickly controlled by firefighter crews in the air and on the ground. The fire was first reported around 7 p.m. July 9 by a passerby who saw flames on the side of the road near mile marker 13.50 on Hwy 253, which is about three miles from the road’s start in Ukiah. The Ukiah Valley Fire Authority responded, along with three Cal Fire air tankers and one helicopter that dropped retardant and water on the flames.The fire was originally described as about one acre in size and threatening one structure.
