The top-seeded Tar Heels left no doubt in their ACC Tournament opener Tuesday morning, routing No. 8 seed Stanford 6-0 at Karen Shelton Stadium to advance to the semifinals Wednesday. The entire tournament is being hosted in Chapel Hill.

First team All-ACC honoree Charly Bruder got the scoring started inside the opening minute, giving the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead just 33 seconds into the game. Second team honoree Ryleigh Heck added two more in the second quarter to extend the lead to 3-0 at halftime.
The second half started very similarly to the first, as ACC Freshman of the Year Sofia Ferri found the back of the cage less than a minute in. Coco Courtright and Hope Haynes would also score before the day was done, giving the Tar Heels five different scorers for six goals.
In the Tar Heel cage, goalie Tessa Shahbo made two first-half saves to keep the Cardinal off the board before yielding to Merritt Skubisz in the fourth quarter. Skubisz made a save of her own to clinch Carolina’s fourth shutout of an ACC opponent this season.
UNC has now won three consecutive games, giving up only one goal in that streak and outscoring the opposition 13-1. Up next, the Tar Heels will face either No. 4 seed Syracuse or No. 5 seed Louisville in the tournament semifinals Wednesday afternoon. The Orange and Cardinals get underway at Karen Shelton Stadium at 12:30 p.m., and Wednesday’s semifinal is scheduled for 1 p.m. Carolina is seeking its 10th consecutive ACC tournament championship and 11th in the last 12 years.
