A strike at some of Chicago’s busiest parking garages is set to begin Tuesday, with potential disruptions at O’Hare, Midway, major hotels, hospital and even Bears and Bulls games.
According to a new release, roughly 1,200 parking garage workers represented by Teamsters Local 727 say they have launched an “unfair labor practice strike” against parking garages throughout the Chicago area. The strike comes after the union’s most recent collective bargaining agreement expired Sunday, with members saying the companies’ final offer was “disrespectful.”
Union members said their employers refused to bargain, failed to provide information, retaliated against employees and took park in unlawful surveillance.
“These companies broke the law and forced our members onto the strike line,” John T. Coli Jr., secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 727 said in the release. “Parking workers keep Chicagoland moving every day, but employers chose delay tactics, labor law violations, and disrespect instead of bargaining a fair contract. Our members are united and ready to stay in this fight for as long as it takes.”
The employers bargain collectively through the Chicago Parking Association under the Master Parking Agreement, the union said. The strike could include Teamster members from a number of well-known parking garages, including SP Plus/Metropolis; LAZ Parking; Interpark; ABM; Imperial/Reimagine Parking; Legacy Parking; ACE; Peoples Auto Park; Advance Parking, Metro Valet; Park Plus; Pioneer Parking; Vargas; Secure Parking and Windy City Parking Services.
Picket lines were set to begin at 5:30 a.m., the union said, though it wasn’t immediately clear they would take place.
In a statement, a representative for the Chicago Parking Association said it offered an “unprecedented contract proposal” that included “one of the most generous compensation packages in the parking industry nationwide.”
“We believe the offer on the table represents a substantial commitment to our employees and demonstrates just how far we are willing to go to reach a fair agreement,” the statement said in part. “Despite the significance of this proposal, the Union’s leadership has rejected it and is threatening to strike. We remain committed to negotiating in good faith and reaching a fair agreement that benefits everyone involved while avoiding unnecessary disruptions for Chicagoland commuters.”
