Carroll O’Connor Didn’t Think ‘All in the Family’ Changed TV, Despite Breaking Boundaries With Its Controversial 1970s Storylines ...Saudi Arabia

All in the Family is widely lauded as a groundbreaking television show that knocked down boundaries and tackled controversial subjects that other sitcoms wouldn’t touch. But one of the show’s stars didn’t think it changed TV history.

During an interview with the Television Academy Foundation for the Archive of American Television, Carroll O’Connor spoke candidly about his view of the show and whether All in the Family changed the course of television forever.

“No. It was just, it was one of a kind, and television got right back into its old habits,” said O’Connor. “I’m not castigating people for that. But that simply was not the goal. I mean, the goals of a comedy sitcom was to make people feel good, get a lot of laughs, and get the big ratings. Those were not really our goals.”

The actor also shared his view on if and how sitcoms have evolved from All in the Family. “Really, none of the shows that were working concurrently with All in the Family or that came after All in the Family were developments of All in the Family. It was just there. It was unique. And it was a satire. Other people were not doing satire. They were doing comedy. Their goal was laughter. That was what they wanted to achieve: laughter. “

While the 2026 TV viewer has almost come to expect taboo subjects on the small screen, back in the 1970s (All in the Family aired from 1971 to 1979), racism, antisemitism, homosexuality, classism, pregnancy loss, religion, women’s rights, infidelity, impotence, menopause, and politics weren’t common television themes. That is, until All in the Family broke ground, bringing these subjects into Americans’ homes.

“Our goal, at least, my goal, and I was strong enough to achieve it. Yes, we got our laughter. And Norman wanted above all laughter. We all wanted laughter, but I wanted something beyond that. I wanted the satire. I wanted the commentary on the age,” explained O’Connor. “All in the Family was just a view of America on all levels. It satirized the kind of social and racial stupidity on all levels, not just the working-class level of Archie. I’ve met two or three multi-millionaire oil men who are Archie Bunker.”

All in the Family would eventually become one of the most important sitcoms in TV history. But at the time, critics weren’t sure how well it would go over. A 1971 review in The Hollywood Reporter panned the then-up-and-coming series: “All in the Family is either going to be an instant smash or instant disaster. Unfortunately for Bud Yorkin and Norman Lear, who based this on the British series Til Death Do Us Part, the latter is more likely to occur. The majority of television viewers will find this show tasteless, crude, and very unfunny.”

Of course, some viewers didn’t get it. But over the years, the landmark sitcom became one of the most well-known series of all time. From 1971 to 1979, the show, cast, writers, and directors were nominated for a collective 55 Emmys and won 22 of the awards. All in the Family and the comedy’s stars were also nominated for an impressive 30 Golden Globes, winning eight times.
