In the high-stakes era of 1970s Top 40 radio, disc jockeys were used to intense listener demand. But the craze surrounding Donny Osmond’s 1972 hit “Puppy Love” pushed one legendary broadcaster straight over the edge.
Frustrated by a relentless barrage of fan requests, 93/KHJ personality Robert W. Morgan decided to give teenage listeners exactly what they were asking for. He played the track on an endless loop for 90 minutes straight, but his stunt turned into a reaction he wasn’t expecting.
In a Facebook post dated 2018, Osmond recalled the music history moment, that occurred on March 15, 1972. He captioned a video of himself on Britain’s Top of the Pops singing the song, backed by his brothers Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay Osmond.
He wrote, “#OTD in 1972, LAPD rushed to my favorite top radio station, KHJ in Hollywood, after receiving calls from worried listeners who thought something terrible was happening at the station. The DJ, Robert W. Morgan, played my record “Puppy Love” on repeat for over 90 minutes straight.”

Osmond continued, “He had gotten so tired of my fans constantly requesting it that he decided to play it over and over again until everyone got sick of hearing it. LOL! I guess it backfired because ‘Puppy Love’ went on to be certified Gold later that same month. Thanks, Robert. I owe you one!”
Paul Anka originally wrote “Puppy Love” in 1960 about his relationship with former Mousketeer and movie star Annette Funicello. They were both 17.
“Just because we were 17 didn’t mean that, for us, our love wasn’t real,” Funicello wrote in her autobiography. Her statement was reprinted by WGCU.
Anka rose to No. 2 with the song on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1960, where it stayed for two weeks. Osmond came in just under Anka’s version, at No. 3, in 1972.
While the Osmond brothers were already chart royalty thanks to hits like “One Bad Apple,” it was Donny’s solo performance on “Puppy Love” that officially catapulted him from the band’s youngest member to an international teen idol phenomenon. The song’s astronomical success instantly transformed Donny into the undisputed teen magazine cover boy of the era.
However, as Osmond transitioned into adulthood, the overwhelming pop culture weight of “Puppy Love” made it notoriously difficult for him to be known for other types of music. Promoters and radio station program directors found it hard to look past the teen-idol image permanently etched into the public consciousness.
It wasn’t until his dramatic late-’80s comeback with the smash hit “Soldier of Love” that Donny Osmond was able to prove his staying power as an adult artist. Yet over the years, he has fully embraced “Puppy Love” as the defining track that made his long, multi-decade career in show business possible.
