Long before James Cromwell became a familiar face to movie fans, the future Oscar-nominated actor made a guest appearance on one of television’s most beloved sitcoms.
Cromwell popped up on M*A*S*H in the Season 6 episode “Last Laugh,” which originally aired on Oct. 4, 1977. He played Captain Leo Bardonaro, an old friend of B.J. Hunnicutt (Mike Farrell) whose visit to the 4077th brings a little friendly competition (and plenty of practical jokes) to the Army hospital.
In the episode, Bardonaro and B.J. reconnect through their shared prank history. Hawkeye (Alan Alda) also gets pulled into the antics, helping make the captain’s departure from Korea memorable.
At the time, Cromwell was still years away from the roles that would make him a Hollywood fixture.
His big breakthrough came in 1995, when he played Farmer Arthur Hoggett in Babe, the family film about a pig with dreams of becoming a sheepdog. Cromwell earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the performance and returned to the role in the 1998 sequel, Babe: Pig in the City.
He later demonstrated his range in the 1997 crime drama L.A. Confidential, playing the calculating police captain Dudley Smith.
His other film credits include The Green Mile, The Queen, I, Robot, while television audiences have seen him in series including Six Feet Under and American Horror Story: Asylum. He won an Emmy for his work on the latter.
Cromwell’s appearance on M*A*S*H is a fun early-career discovery for fans who know him from his later work. He may have spent just one episode at the 4077th, but he went on to become one of Hollywood’s most recognizable character actors.
And while his role as Captain Bardonaro was a relatively brief stop along the way, it’s another reminder of the future stars who passed through the doors of the M*A*S*H* camp before their biggest moments arrived.
