ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Some elderly and disabled tenants at Pinnacle Place Apartments on South Clinton Avenue have been forced out of their homes after a recent sewage backup left them dealing with damage and sickness.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with at least three residents who said they were affected by sewage backups in their apartments early last week. Several tenants said they could not return home as the complex worked to clean up the overflow.
Pipe burst damage
“Water all over the floor, feces, toilet paper, everything coming all over the floor. Everything in my apartment damn near got wet that was on the floor,” Maria Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez, a 5 year resident of Pinnacle Place, said management put her in an unoccupied apartment while they cleaned her home from the flood damage.
“Management told I’ll have to wait. [That] they are not responsible for what had got damaged in there. Because I didn’t have renter’s insurance. I didn’t have renter’s insurance because when I signed my lease, no one ever told me I had to get it before I signed it,” Rodriguez said.
Management responds
“Pathstone Management, which owns Pinnacle Place, sent the following statement via email to News10NBC.
On October 19, a sewer line backup affected several apartments at Pinnacle Apartments. Our maintenance team responded that night, and we brought in a professional remediation company to remove the water and clean the affected apartments. Every affected household was relocated, either to another apartment in the building or to a hotel, at no cost to residents. Our Resident Services staff has also been helping affected residents with immediate needs, including laundry and connecting them with resources for furniture.
We understand how upsetting it is to have your home and belongings affected. We are reviewing how residents’ damaged personal belongings will be addressed, and we will follow up with each affected household directly.
Any resident who feels they cannot safely remain in their apartment is encouraged to contact our management office so we can talk through their situation and the support available, which may include a transfer to another apartment, temporary assistance, or other arrangements. If a resident decides that moving out is the right choice for them, we will work with them through that process, including ending their lease early and working with the Rochester Housing Authority so they understand how a move would affect their rental assistance and what options are available to them.
We are also working with engineers and contractors on a plan to upgrade Pinnacle’s major building systems, including plumbing, and we will be meeting with residents on November 2 to hear their concerns and share updates.
Any resident with a concern is encouraged to contact the Pinnacle management office at (585) 442-9440.”
Several apartments affects
“It was dripping through where I hang my, my hall, my clothes, of my hall closet, and I had to take all my clothes and move them because it was coming down so fast,” Tacy Mattice said.
Mattice has been living at Pinnacle Place for 11 years.
“It’s very stressful. I mean, I want to get back in my apartment, but I want them to fix this, too,” Mattice said.
“Since I’ve been staying here. I’ve been staying here going on 18 months. And they’ve been backed up on the sewers seven times since I’ve been here. And I have to clean it up all by myself,” said Larry Picket, another tenant.
“Now I’m just here right now. With nothing. No clothes. Shoes, sneakers. Everything’s still in the apartment. Which they said I have to pay for. Which I don’t think is fair, because it wasn’t my fault,” Rodriguez said.
Past issues
Earlier this month, a burst pipe caused the entire first floor to flood, leaving some people without water and unable to get inside for hours.
In mid-August, the trash compactor broke, leading to a trash backup that people said made them sick for more than a week.
Also in August, all three of the building’s main elevators went out of service, and then the power went out, leaving elderly and disabled residents unable to get out for most of a day.
In July, the power and elevators went out again.
Pinnacle Place tenants are scheduled to meet with management on Monday to discuss the ongoing issues and how to fix them.
