The reward has increased to $25,000 for information about the person responsible for killing six dogs in Will County that were found stuffed in trash bags along a wooded ditch earlier this year.
The reward is believed to be the largest ever offered in an animal abuse case in the area.
“This is a case that needs to be solved because whoever did this was depraved, and we got to make sure certain that they’re not out there to harm anyone, any animals in the future,” said James Glasgow, Will County State’s Attorney.
The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office and Crimestoppers of Will County are hoping the record reward will drum up new leads in a case that has shaken the community.
“This is much more than an animal abuse case,” Glasgow said. “These animals were mistreated when they were alive, and they were treated horribly in their death, and then just discarded like trash on the side of the road.”
“When we hear about somebody doing something like this to animals, we know they can’t speak for themselves, so we have to speak for them,” said David Silverman, Crimestoppers of Will County chairman.
In March, Crete Township workers discovered six dogs dumped in trash bags along a wooded ditch near Norfolk Avenue and Kings Road. Investigators said the pit bull-type dogs had been brutalized and killed and showed signs of dog fighting.
“I hope somebody would come forward for the reward but more importantly whoever would torture and kill six small dogs has a problem,” said Jay Bergman, First Secure Bank Group chairman and president. “We got to get this sicko off the streets.”
First Secure Bank Group initially put up $5,000 for the reward and now Pets and Vets USA is adding $20,000 to the pool after hearing about the story.
“It broke my heart that these animals went through such torture and their demise so they need a voice,” said Peter Cangelosi, Pets and Vets USA founder and CEO.
Cangelosi told NBC Chicago since 2013, he’s been rescuing pitbulls and training them to be service dogs for veterans.
“What these dogs go through it’s inhumane, I rehabilitate these animals and I see what their struggles are,” he said. “I’ve had dogs that have taken my six or seven years to rehabilitate for what a monster did to them.”
They know someone out there knows who did this.
“We’re hoping the reward is large enough incentive to get them to either pick up the phone, call our phone number, send us a text by our text number or go on our website,” said Silverman. “Everything with Crime Stoppers is confidential.”
