After watching Gretchen Walsh and Kate Douglass trade off the long-course 50 free world record this summer, it feels only fitting that the two superstars share a bit of the record spotlight as mutuals; in the final of the 50 free at the US Short Course World Championship Trials, Douglass would not surpass the all-time mark set by her friend and training partner Walsh just two weeks ago in Charlottesville in 22.75, but rather match it with a 22.75 of her own in Westmont.

Douglass became the #2 performer in history this morning with her 22.87 prelims swim, earning her the top seed and setting up another clash with Walsh this evening.

Entering this meet, Douglass sat with a best time of 22.94, set just two weeks ago in Charlottesville, which was then the fastest time ever swum on American soil, before Walsh broke her own world record in 22.75 later that day.

Gretchen Walsh (USA) / Kate Douglass (USA) – 22.75 (2026) tie Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED) – 22.93 (2017) Sarah Sjostrom (SWE) – 23.00 (2017) Emma McKeon (AUS) – 23.04 (2024)

We have seen this story many times before: Douglass and Walsh, when the two go head to head, it appears that Douglass is oftentimes able to pull out the win, and that stayed true here; as Douglass used every bit of power to get her hand on the wall ahead of Walsh, who also turned in a sub-23-second time in 22.99.

Fans got a glimpse of what Douglass is capable of on home soil this summer when she obliterated the 50 free world record in the long-course pool, clocking 23.19 at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California.

This swim may also serve as a warning shot to the rest of the globe as we inch closer to the Short Course World Championships in Beijing, where both Walsh and Douglass, the co-world-record-holders, will get to face off on the biggest stage in short-course swimming with not only a world record potentially on the line, but also a world title.
