Katie Hoff, the three-time Olympic medalist at the 2008 Olympics, eight-time World Championship gold medalist (7 long course, 1 short course), and host of the highly successful podcast Unfiltered Waters, may be making a charge at the 2028 US Olympic Trials, posting that she has her eyes on the 100 breast qualifying time.
Hoff took to Instagram to share her goal of reaching that qualifying time, though making another Olympic team isn’t in the cards.

Hoff, 37, was one of the most prominent American IM and freestyle swimmers in the mid-to-late 2000s, but she hasn’t competed since retiring in 2015 after battling blood clots in her lungs.
She said that while she appreciates the kind words and support on her journey, she doesn’t want to give people the wrong idea that she is looking to make a comeback and make another Olympic Team.
“OK, I’ve put out my goal of wanting to get my 100 breast Olympic trial cut for 2028. But let’s talk about it, because I think a lot of people hear trials and they think, ‘ Oh, you’re making a comeback for the Olympics?’, which is really nice for people to think that, but here’s why that’s not true.” Hoff said in her Instagram message.
Hoff recently gave birth to her first child, Andie, back in August with her husband, former Michigan State football player Todd Anderson.
“First off, if I can make an Olympic team being 10 years removed from swimming my eighth-best event ever, swimming probably four times a week with a baby, then being an Olympian isn’t as hard as they say,” Hoff said. “The amount it requires to make an Olympic team is not my life right now… I’m not saying I could anyway, even if I dedicated the amount of hours needed in my best event; let me be clear.”
Hoff has been a host of the Unfiltered Waters podcast since early 2024, where she and her co-hosts, which have included fellow Olympians Missy Franklin and Elizabeth Beisel, have become one of the most popular swimming podcasts in the world, featuring star-studded guests from all over the world for in-depth conversations regarding all aspects of the sport. Their YouTube channel currently has nearly 50,000 subscribers, while their Instagram account boasts another 26,00 followers.
In her prime, Hoff was primarily an IM and mid-distance free specialist, so going for a trials cut in an event where she’d never won an international medal was a bit of a question, though Hoff adds that it lets her train like a sprinter.
“People might be asking why not go in your better events, because for once in my life, I’ve wanted to train as a sprinter; it’s an opportunity to experiment and see where I’m at, especially in the weight room,” Hoff added. “So that excites me, and it’s just really cool to be excited about a goal, a physical goal, for the first time since I retired.”
Hoff assured her fans that she won’t be in the pool at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, though she will attend as a podcaster.
“No LA for me. Except as a podcaster and a Team USA fan.”
The 2028 Olympic Trials qualifying standard in the women’s 100 breast is set at 1:10.19. For reference, Hoff’s career best in the event came in 2014 at the Florida SZS Summer Sectionals, when she was 25, with a 1:08.60.
