There is something that any parent of a toddler – in fact, anyone who’s had to keep one out of trouble for a couple of hours – knows. If a tantrum is incoming, distraction is your friend. There is no reasoning with a small child, and woe betide anyone who attempts to tackle a furious preschooler head-on. Diverting their attention with something bright and shiny is very much the way forward.
This appears to be the exact approach that some of President Donald Trump’s closest aides are taking to managing the ego of the most powerful man in the world in the final days before US midterm elections that will decide the shape of the remaining two years of his presidency.
The reality for the President is a miserable one: Trump’s party is almost certain to lose control of the House of Representatives, meaning Democrats will be in charge of crucial committees that can launch investigations into his administration.
Even worse, there is a mounting chance that Democrats will take control of the Senate, something that was regarded as close to impossible even a year ago, because Republicans could lose seats in heartland states like Texas, Ohio and even Kansas, which hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate in 94 years.
If Trump loses the Senate, he can only appoint judges and senior administration officials with the approval of Democrats – a distant prospect indeed. Having woken up to the threat that the midterms pose to his legacy, the President has been on a frenetic tour of once-safe states, desperately trying to whip up his voter base to turn out for him one last time.
I’ve covered dozens if not hundreds of Trump rallies and I can’t recall him ever holding one in a room as small as this arena in Chillicothe, Ohio. It’ll be packed and loud- but maybe 1000 people will fit. pic.twitter.com/ik08C2ee9U
— Garrett Haake (@GarrettHaake) October 28, 2026It’s not clear the efforts are working.
Even in states that Trump won by ten, 20 or even more points just two years ago, he’s giving his trademark rambling speeches to tiny arenas with rows and rows of empty seats.
The President is getting heckled, something that almost never happened a few years ago. Even Trump’s ultra-loyalist crowds are now only laughing at some of his jokes.

— Robby Roadsteamer (@RobbyRoadsteame) October 29, 2026All of that makes for a Trump temper tantrum, and the President notoriously lashes out when his temper is short. Trump’s Department of Justice is threatening to challenge election results the President doesn’t like as illegitimate, and is announcing on an almost daily basis new attempts to prosecute his political enemies, such as former FBI director James Comey.
When he’s not lashing out, Trump appears to be retreating to a comfort zone of AI slop, of himself as a superhero or a strongman, of his political enemies in ruins. He posts clips of nonsense polls showing his approval rating at 99 per cent or 98 per cent, seemingly not understanding that these relate solely to voters who define themselves as “Maga Republicans”. Of course that group still supports him strongly: his problem is that the group is not as big as it was a few years ago.
Trump seems to be retreating to his comfort zone, a controlled media bubble of reassuring memes and carefully massaged polls that tell the President what he wants to hear. The New York Times helps to explain why: Natalie Harp, Trump’s closest aide, has engineered it for him.
White House aide Natalie Harp has turned the presidential dining room into a den for her boss to watch cable TV and sift through printouts of articles and memes (Photo: Saul Loeb / AFP via Getty Images)The newspaper reports that Harp has turned the presidential dining room, just off the Oval Office, into her personal workroom and a presidential TV den, where he can retreat to watch cable news. On top of that, she has filled it with printouts of reassuring articles and memes for him to enjoy or repost.
She has been joined in that effort by Bill Pulte, whose day job is ostensibly working as the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, from which perch he has tried to pursue Trump’s enemies, including Federal Reserve governors, over alleged mortgage fraud.
Recently, though, Pulte can more commonly be found generating the AI memes and manipulated images and video that the President has been posting. Pulte and Harp seem to have set up a boutique operation to keep Trump happy and isolate him from reality. Trump, a president who has long been dismissed by his critics as the toddler-in-chief, is being kept distracted.
That might work for the next few days, of course, but the clock is ticking down on that approach: the midterms are less than five days away, and barring an even bigger polling error than in any of the past five US elections, they will be disastrous for Trump – and his rage could overspill in any number of directions all at once.
Much like the efforts of any exhausted parents, the high-level distraction operation deployed by Trump’s top aides is just about working, for the moment. But any minute now, the world’s most childish leader may recognise the electoral reality that is heading his way – and erupt in the most dangerous fashion.
