But I’ll take his 3.10 ERA over 31 starts (180.0 IP) this year over his 3.10 ERA spread across 16 starts, 26 relief appearances, and 142.1 IP in 2024. In any case, Martinez takes the mound tonight for a big-boy matchup in Game 1 of the 2026 World Series against the presumptive NL Cy Young Award winner, Jacob Misiorowski.
Martinez faced the Brewers once this season, all the way back in March, when he held them to just two earned runs over 6.0 innings at American Family Field, where they’ll meet again tonight. And while even that performance might not be good enough to outduel The Miz, I think the Rays would take those results again in a heartbeat if they could.
As a reminder, the Brewers were the best offense in MLB against right-handed pitching this season (well, tied with the Cubs at 112 wRC+), but were much worse off against lefties (97 wRC+). Unfortunately for Tampa Bay, Martinez is a righty.
Milwaukee Brewers: Jacob Misiorowski, RHP
What’s left to say about the regular season this kid just had? The 24-year-old righty threw more 100 mph pitches than … *insert any stat you want, because they’re all equally true and wildly impressive…* and he’s gotten plenty of rest this postseason, having appeared in just two games covering 8.1 IP.
If the adrenaline-induced velo bump carries over to him tonight, maybe we’ll even see a true 106 mph pitch. He’s gotten close before (105.5 mph against Pete Crow-Armstrong back on June 27).
Misiorowski has faced the Rays once this season, back on April 1, holding them to two earned runs over 6.0 IP, just like Martinez.
