This Cole Kmet update from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport isn’t one that anyone wanted to see.
The Chicago Bears tight end is believed to have suffered what is likely a season-ending knee injury:
#Bears TE Cole Kmet, who was carted off in last night’s win over the #Patriots, is believed to have suffered a serious, likely season-ending knee injury, sources say. Kmet is undergoing testing this morning, and until those results come back, there is no finality. t.co/KaC9OvvTdn
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 23, 2026Kmet was carted off the field in the fourth-quarter of the Bears’ Week 7 win against the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football after making a catch on the sideline. I’d describe the play and the imagery, but it was ugly and gut-wrenching in the moment, and I want to spare you those visuals.
For what it’s worth, Rapoport leaves the door open for the possibility of better news coming after Cole Kmet undergoes testing. Still, this is a serious injury and a considerable blow to Chicago’s offense.

Kmet, 27, is the longest-tenured active Bears player. A second-round pick (43rd overall) in the 2020 NFL Draft, Kmet has grown into a solid role player and a key piece of the Bears’ offense. After playing on teams with losing records in four of his first five seasons, Kmet got his first taste of a winning season in 2025 and was thriving in his role as TE2 in 2026. Losing him stinks.

Kmet going down with an injury during the Bears’ win against the Patriots on Thursday Night Football stings on so many levels. Watching a player who battled through some lean years, only to suffer an injury during a statement victory for this franchise is a real bummer.
That said, Cole Kmet did make some Bears history last night. So in an attempt to lighten the mood around here, I wanted to share this:
#ChicagoBears @ColeKmet now over 3000 career yards receiving… appropriately on the night they honor Coach, Kmet joins Mike Ditka as the only TEs in Chicago franchise history with 3000+ receiving yards.
— Peggy Kusinski (@peggykusinski) October 23, 2026Kmet joining Mike Ditka as the only tight ends in Bears franchise history to pass 3,000 receiving yards in the first game at Soldier Field after Ditka’s death is quite a moment. And to do it as someone who grew up rooting for the Bears probably made it feel extra special for Kmet. I hope he has a speedy and full recovery.
