Air quality for some parts of Chicago area ‘unhealthy' for some amid pollutants, fog ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Some parts of the Chicago area woke up to poor air quality Friday morning, with pollutants pushing air quality into the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category and as a dense fog advisory remained in effect.

As of 6 a.m., AirNow.gov showed air quality in parts of Cook County and extending into DuPage County ranking as “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” or level three of six on the site’s air quality scale. Some of those areas included Tinley Park, Elmhurst, Downers Grove, York, Oak Lawn, Frankfort and Chicago Heights, the AirNow map showed.

Elsewhere, the air quality was “moderate,” or level two.

The unhealthy air quality conditions weren’t because of ozone, NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Iisha Scott said.

“It’s primarily due to stagnant air,” Scott said. “Of course, the fog doesn’t help at all, and we have light winds.”

The National Weather Service defines stagnant air as a “major building of air pollution in the atmosphere.”

“This usually occurs when the same air mass is parked over the same area for several days,” the NWS said. “During this time, the light winds cannot ‘cleanse’ the buildup of smoke, dust, gases, and other industrial air pollution.”

A dense fog advisory was also in effect for parts of the Chicago area Friday morning, with visibility at one-quarter mile or less.

The advisory, in effect until 9 a.m., includes Lake County in Illinois and Kenosha County in Wisconsin.

“The worst conditions are expected in northeastern portions of the county, and near the Wisconsin stateline,” the NWS said, warning visibility could change quickly.

Scott said the moderate air quality was expected to last through the weekend.

“Just a heads up, if you do have maybe a sensitivity to pollutants in the atmosphere,” Scott said.

Chicago weekend forecast

The weekend forecast for the Chicago area remains sunny and mild, with above-average temperatures in the low 70s but cooler near the lake.

By Monday, temperatures will drop to the low-to-mid 60s. Temperatures will remain in the 60s throughout the week and even for Halloween, Scott said, with a chance of rain midweek.
