If you picked up a pint of gelato at Lidl this summer or fall, it’s worth taking a closer look at your freezer.
Lidl US is recalling one lot of its Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato with Coffee Sauce & Cookie Pieces because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to a company announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall was initiated after routine quality testing found Listeria in a lab sample.
The affected 16-ounce pints were sold at Lidl stores in Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C., between July 19 and Oct. 15. Because the recalled gelato carries a best-by date of March 26, 2028, many containers bought months ago could still be tucked away in home freezers.
To check, flip the container over. The recalled product comes in a clear plastic tub with a brown lid and is marked with UPC 4 0564897 22458, lot number 085261 and a best-by date of MAR/26/2028 on the bottom.
No illnesses have been reported so far, but the FDA notice warns that Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
Customers should throw the gelato away or return it to their nearest Lidl for a full refund, no receipt required. Anyone with questions can call the Lidl US Customer Care Hotline at 844-747-5435, Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
“The health and safety of our customers is our top priority,” the company said in its announcement.
With a frozen treat this easy to forget about, a quick freezer check could save you from a nasty surprise, and if your pint matches, skip the scoop and take it back.
