Some chains can never be broken, no matter how hard the people inside them pull.
In 1976, the five members of Fleetwood Mac walked into a Sausalito, Calif., studio with their lives in pieces. John McVie’s and Christine McVie’s marriage was over. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham had split after years together. Mick Fleetwood’s own marriage was crumbling. Instead of walking away from each other, they did something almost unthinkable: they stayed in the same room and sang about it.
The result was Rumours, and the world couldn’t get enough. The album spent 31 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, won the Grammy for Album of the Year and went on to sell more than 40 million copies worldwide. Fans weren’t just buying hit songs. They were listening in on a real-life soap opera, hearing Buckingham tell Nicks to “Go Your Own Way” while she answered with the haunting “Dreams,” the band’s only No. 1 single in the U.S.
Nearly 50 years later, that story is finally getting the documentary it deserves. According to Rolling Stone, Fleetwood Mac: The Chain premieres on Apple TV on Jan. 29, 2027, days before the album’s 50th anniversary on Feb. 4. Directed by Frank Marshall, it’s the first fully authorized film about the band, with never-before-seen footage and new interviews with its core members.
View this post on Instagram“The Chain” is the only song in the band’s catalog credited to all five members, a reminder that even at their most broken, they still made music together. It also carries extra weight now, since Christine McVie died in 2022.
And the healing may not be finished. Nicks and Buckingham are back on speaking terms years after his 2018 departure, and Buckingham has teased that big things are ahead. “Next year should be a pretty interesting year,” he said in August 2025.
With Rumours turning 50, The Chain will revisit the heartbreak behind the music that continues to resonate with generations of fans.
