Thousands of full-time manufacturing jobs are coming to the Chicago suburbs, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced Thursday, marking what the state described as the “largest single Illinois job creation commitment” for manufacturing in recent history.
The jobs, Pritzker said, are part of Hyundai Translead’s previously announced plans for new trailer manufacturing facilities including two in Will County. The sites will bring new manufacturing operations and jobs to the former sites of Caterpillar’s heavy equipment operations and Lion Electric’s electric bus operations, according to officials.
In March, Pritzker said the facilities would bring 2,500 new full-time jobs. Now, that number has increased to 3,750, the state said, with the global manufacturing company adding a third shift to “meet growing demand.”
Part of the investment includes a new Manufacturing Training Academy at Joliet Junior College, Pritzker said.
“Once upon a time, this was the economic engine for the city of Joliet,” Joliet Mayor Terry D’Arcy said during a news conference. “And we now see the revitalization, we’re so proud of that and grateful to have that here. To support families, build careers, and contribute to our regional economy. Its impact will extend beyond these walls.”
Illinois is home to 650,000 people working in manufacturing,” Pritzker said, “and we need more.”
“Honestly, we’ve got a lot of empty positions,” he said. “It requires certain skills.”
According to the announcement, new manufacturing academy will increase JJC’s ability to “train industrial maintenance and advanced manufacturing technicians.” It will also double the college’s welding capacity, the announcement said.
Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant also spoke at the news conference, saying the county is “at the center of growth for jobs and manufacturing in Illinois and the Midwest.”
The announcement comes as other manufacturing jobs have left Illinois in recent years. Earlier this year, Tyson Foods announced it was closing a beef plant in Rock Island County. In 2022, Caterpillar announced it would move its global headquarters from the Chicago area to Texas, with CEO Jim Umpleby saying in a statement at the time the move was “in the best strategic interest of the company.”
Thursday, Pritzker said Caterpillar’s headquarter move involved about 120 jobs, and that the company has since added thousands of jobs back in Illinois.
Pritzker added that Illinois competed with other states to attract Hyundai Translead, saying “they could go anywhere in the United States.”
“Manufacturing has long been an important part of Joliet’s economy, and Hyundai Translead’s growing investment is a tremendous vote of confidence in our city and its workforce,” D’Arcy said.
