Barnes & Noble has announced 16 finalists for its 2026 Book of the Year award, a list that includes novels, nonfiction reads, children’s books and more.
The program, now in its eighth year, asks Barnes & Noble booksellers nationwide to nominate titles they consider outstanding and have been especially proud to recommend throughout the year. Booksellers are the employees who work in Barnes & Noble stores, helping customers discover new reads. The winner is then selected through a vote by booksellers nationwide and will be announced on Nov. 12.
Past winners of the award include Bonnie Garmus’ Lessons in Chemistry, which was later adapted into an Apple TV series, and Percival Everett’s James, which went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award.
“This has been another wonderful year of publishing, and a great year for booksellers,” said James Daunt, CEO of Barnes & Noble, in a press release announcing the 2026 finalists. “The success of real bookstores, these inspiring physical places in which readers get so much pleasure, is a tremendous affirmation of the power of individual curation and the triumph of personal recommendation.”
