It wasn’t so long ago that Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia was hosting Serie D matches; on Wednesday, it hosts to Manchester United in the Champions League. It’s been a rapid rise for Como.
San Siro, Delle Alpi, Olimpico, Artemio Franchi; Manchester United have played in some of Italy’s most iconic stadiums over the years in European competition. On Wednesday, they’ll add another to the list.
Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia may not be among the more recognisable names to the uninitiated when it comes to Italian grounds, but the home of Como 1907 certainly has a rather unique allure and charm that’ll at the very least leave a mark on the United fans who make the trip.
Positioned literally a stone’s throw from the resplendent Lake Como and with the Italian Alps forming a spectacular backdrop, you’ll do well to find many more picturesque football locations in Europe’s big five leagues.
This is our home. And this is where we’ll play in Europe. For almost 100 years, the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia has been part of Como 1907, our city and our supporters. Now, for the first time, Champions League nights are coming to the shores of Lake Como.It starts here on… pic.twitter.com/L56xDadNhh

The stadium’s rather modest appearance and size may be at odds with the club’s long-term ambition, but that is also illustrative of a rapid rise that’s seen Como go from below 3,500th in the Opta Power Rankings seven years ago to 29th as of Wednesday.
Danny Dinsdale / Data ScientistNow, it should be noted from the outset that Como’s ascent is hardly a ‘Cinderella’ story based purely around smart recruitment, great coaching and building gradually. The club was purchased in 2019 by Djarum Group, a subsidiary of PT Djarum, one of the world’s biggest cigarette manufacturers.
Although they began the 2019-20 season in the third tier, the takeover meant they suddenly had the richest owners in Italian football. If they were serious about transforming the club’s fortunes on the pitch, it was surely only a matter of time until Como were back in Serie A.
Nevertheless, Como’s ascent is still an impressive achievement, and the visit of Manchester United in the Champions League will provide many supporters with a pinch-yourself moment, even if United aren’t the force they once were.
Just after the takeover, Como secured promotion from Serie D to Serie C, where they went on to spend two seasons before returning to Serie B, a level they’d only played at for one year since the club’s legal predecessor was liquidated in 2005.
Ithiel Piñero / Data AnalystFormer Chelsea captain Dennis Wise played an important role in Djarum’s early ownership, going from “consultant, before taking on the CEO role and becoming president”, he told the Guardian earlier this year.
“I took total control of the football club, from top to bottom, employing every single person in the building,” he added. “There wasn’t too much interest from afar at that stage – and [the owners] left me to my own devices, really.
“I never had much to spend in the transfer market, so I had to try to do some really good deals. We had 14 loans at one stage – it was about filtering in and out, because there wasn’t money to spend. Then, all of a sudden, it started to grow.”
Como’s return to Serie B in 2021 proved crucial to the greater interest alluded to by Wise. Soon, he wasn’t the only big-name former Premier League player involved.
