Demi Lovato has shared who she considers to be her first idol in the music industry. The “Cool for the Summer” hit-maker revealed who they were last week while chatting on Street You Grew Up on with Kerry Washington.
The star gushed endlessly about Kelly Clarkson and how watching her competing on and ultimately winning American Idol inspired her greatly. She shared: “When Kelly Clarkson won American Idol and she sang ‘A Moment Like This,’ that was a game-changer for me.”
Demi recalled how she wanted to “be her someday”, and believes she is where she is today thanks to the inspiration that Kelly provided. She even revealed that she would often challenge herself to improve her vocal range by singing Kelly’s song “Since U Been Gone”!
She continued to share: “When I met her for the first time I hugged her three times because I was just like, you don’t know what you mean to me and how you’ve shaped my career. I am who I am as a singer because of you.”
Demi released her latest studio album back in October of last year, titled “It’s Not That Deep”. Off the back of its release she embarked on a tour which wrapped up in May.
Aside from music Demi has delved back into the world of acting this year, reprising her role of Mitchie Torres for a cameo in the endlessly popular Camp Rock franchise on the Disney Channel. She specifically performed the cameo for Camp Rock 3 this past August.
Speaking about revisiting Camp Rock, Demi told PEOPLE at the premiere for the film in Los Angeles: “It was so healing and so nostalgic for me to be a part of this film, and I’m so happy. Seeing this generation take on these roles was so exciting to me. Camp Rock means so much to me. It always has. And now it’s going to mean so much to a whole new group of people, who are so talented and deserve every bit of success that comes their way.”
