Rochester City Council meeting
Rochester City Council members will meet on Tuesday to vote on proposed legislation and hear from community members. The meeting starts at 6 p.m.
You can watch the meeting live on Rochester City Council’s YouTube page and Facebook page. During the public hearing, people will have a chance to weigh in on proposals to amend the zoning classifications for 30 Elmerston Rd., 965 North Goodman St., and 576 Bay St. There’s no need to sign up to speak.
You can see the full meeting agenda here. Some of the items include a proposal to sell six vacant residential places in the Strong Neighborhoods and to enter an agreement with Monroe County for lead paint poisoning prevention inspection services.
Gun buyback event
The Rochester Police Department is holding a gun buyback event on Tuesday, offering money in exchange for getting guns off the streets.
Organizers say the goal is not to discourage responsible gun ownership, but to allow people to get rid of potentially dangerous guns they no longer want. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Church of Love Faith Center on Exchange Street. There’s a no-questions-asked policy for the guns brought in.
People can drop off unloaded guns, placed in a bag or box, at a series of tables staffed by Rochester Police officers, Monroe County deputies, and other law enforcement agencies. Participants can receive a prepaid gift card worth up to $600 depending on the type of gun turned in. You can learn more and see our interview with the minister of operations at the Church of Love Faith Center here.
