Parts of the Chicago area are under a dense fog advisory Tuesday morning, with visibility close to zero making leading to dangerous driving conditions for the rush hour commute.
The advisory, issued for Central Cook, Lake, DuPage and McHenry Counties in Illinois, and Kenosha County in Wisconsin, remains in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday. The fog was especially thick in the northern suburbs and north of the Eisenhower Expressway, the National Weather Service warned.
Photos and video from the north and northwest suburbs captured early Tuesday morning showed the blurry, foggy conditions for drivers.
“We could drop close to zero visibility as we go over the next couple hours,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Iisha Scott said. As of 5:30 a.m., visibility at Chicago O’Hare International Airport and in the city were just above zero.
“Be careful on the roads because visibility could change and will change quickly,” Scott warned.
Once the sun comes out, the fog will start to lift.
“So that’s that’s the good news,” Scott said. “We’ll have to get through the next couple of hours first.”
After a chilly morning, temperatures Tuesday will rise into the mid-to-upper 60s, “unless you are right along the immediate lakeshore,” Scott said. There, temperatures will remain in the low 60s.
Patchy fog could return Wednesday morning, Scott said. Temperatures and conditions are expected to remain mild as the week continues.
