A high school football game between suburban rivals has sparked a lot of soul-searching in two communities.
On Monday night, parents from New Trier Township High School and Evanston Township High School spoke out about reports of racist and homophobic comments directed toward Evanston’s marching band during Friday’s rivalry game at the new Ryan Field.
Monday marked the first time since the game that top educators from New Trier have addressed what happened in person. That event has left a lot of students and families hurt and angry.
Jennifer Sadler faced the board at New Trier on Monday, and while her child doesn’t attend the school, they were involved in a controversy that has been brewing since Friday.
“It’s your job to make sure she’s safe at school, that she’s safe when your students are interacting with her,” Sadler said.
Her child, Kevin Watts, first spoke with NBC Chicago on Sunday.
“The n-word, the f-slur,” Kevin said. “That’s personally what I heard.”
The color guard captain at Evanston Township said they heard racist and homophobic comments from the New Trier student section. The marching band was there to perform as the rival schools faced off.
“Then they start screaming to kill ourselves,” Kevin said.
New Trier’s superintendent called the reported behavior “unacceptable.”
“It’s painful to see students share a story like that while they were preparing for their big day on a big stage…on behalf of the entire community, please accept my apology,” he said.
Evanston Township officials said education is as important as accountability.
“We like to remind people that we’re talking about high school students who are still young people who are learning and growing,” Evanston Township High School District 202 Director of Communications Reine Hanna said.
Kevin’s mother is also pushing for accountability.
“I want you to be specific on what was said and what specific actions that you are taking for those students, and also for parents to make sure that they understand that their kids can’t come to your school and do things like that, and to reassure parents who are sending their kids to that school, that they aren’t sending their kids to a school that’s full of bullies,” Sadler said.
As both high schools continue to investigate, New Trier’s superintendent said the school will come together to learn from the incident.
