The Go-Go’s, fellow survivors of the new wave scene of the 1970s and 1980s (who received their star in 2011), and musician/actor/comedian Fred Armisen are set to speak at the event, which will be streamed live at www.walkoffame.com.
The group’s star is located at 6212 Hollywood Boulevard in front of Amoeba Music.
The B-52s reached their peak with their 1989 album Cosmic Thing, which reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for 65 weeks. The album spawned back-to-back hit singles, “Love Shack” and “Roam.” Each of those hits reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and received a Grammy nomination for best pop performance by a duo or group with vocal. The group’s follow-up album, Good Stuff, reached No. 16 on the Billboard 200 and received a Grammy nod for best alternative music album.
The B-52s formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1976. The original lineup consisted of Fred Schneider (vocals, percussion), Kate Pierson (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer bass), Cindy Wilson (vocals, percussion), Ricky Wilson (guitar, vocals) and Keith Strickland (drums, guitar, keyboards, vocals). Ricky Wilson (Cindy’s brother) died of AIDS-related illness in 1985, whereupon Strickland permanently switched from drums to lead guitar. The band has also added various auxiliary members for albums and live performances.
“The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome the B-52s to the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” Ana Martinez, Walk of Fame producer said in a statement. “Honoring The B-52s with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is a celebration of their unforgettable music, fearless spirit, and the nostalgia they’ve created for generations of fans. Their unique sound and energy have truly become part of Hollywood’s musical history.”
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce administers the Walk of Fame for the City of Los Angeles and has hosted iconic star ceremonies for decades. Millions have visited this cultural landmark since 1960.
