Free from routine: How sidequests encourage spontaneity, community ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Many college students are met with navigating the structure and independence that comes with transitioning to campus life, leaving many looking to alleviate some of the pressure. There has been an increase in the trend of side questing, giving students the opportunity to take a break from their normal routine.

With the term originating from tasks in video games, real-life side quests are small, spontaneous adventures that take you outside your usual routine, with the aim of trying something new and having fun, rather than being productive. And for students, these moments away from computers and classrooms make room for opportunities to reconnect with themselves and each other.

“It’s just an experience,” said Ariel Guy, a junior majoring in studio art. “I think you should go and do random things with your friends while you can.”

Side quests can be completed alone or with friends, and whenever busy schedules allow. Guy takes on side quests “every so often,” in which her most recent side quest diverted from a moment with friends to an unexpected excursion.

Through his own busy schedule, Dominick Hylton, a sophomore neuroscience major, said he still manages to fit in time to take side quests on campus.

“I just don’t do it too often,” Hylton said. “The most I do is sporting events.”

At the University, side quests are not limited to the borders of campus. Other students, like Alexander Zayatz, a sophomore aerospace engineering major, take side quests beyond Tuscaloosa, and even Alabama.

“Any time myself and my friends are all free, we’re willing to drive anywhere within an eight hour radius,” Zayataz said. “A couple weeks ago, we took a five-and-a-half hour day trip to Gulf Shores, and last year we took a road trip from here to Nashville, to Atlanta, to Destin and back.”

Zayatz said he ensures to schedule time for these side quests around free weekends and school breaks to prevent any clashing with his school schedule.

“I do my best on the weekdays to have random days open on the weekends, but a lot of these coincide with times where school kind of slows down,” Zayatz said.

Side questing is not just seen as an opportunity to get out of a typical routine, but to also spend the time that students are not able to get back after college. It is a way to bond with friends and find a balance between education and experiences that may only come once in a lifetime.

“[College] is most people’s first time with general autonomy, and it’s definitely the last that you will have as much of this time,” Zaytaz said. “I think you should fit in whatever you can do.”
