Julia Louis-Dreyfus Was Larry David’s First Pick to Play Elaine, But She Nearly Turned Him Down ...Saudi Arabia

True Seinfeld fans know that Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) does not appear in the first episode of the show. The pilot, which aired under the title The Seinfeld Chronicles, established a trio of Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld), George (Jason Alexander) and Kramer (Michael Richards).

After several months in limbo post-pilot, NBC finally greenlit a meager four-episode season order. This four-episode stretch was creator Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld’s final chance to convince the network that Seinfeld was a show that could command a large audience.

NBC’s only major condition for greenlighting the short first season was that the show must add a woman to the cast, and for Larry David the choice of woman was obvious.

Why Larry David Wanted Louis-Dreyfus For Elaine

As explored in the new biography of Larry David — Emperor of Nothing by Blake J. Harris, releasing October 20, 2026 — David and Louis-Dreyfus had both worked on Saturday Night Live together, and neither of them had a good time. The two bonded over their frustrations with the job and their mutual dislike of Dick Ebersol, who’d replaced Lorne Michaels as the SNL showrunner in the early ’80s.

“Dick Ebersol was always wielding a baseball bat,” Julia recalled to Harris. “He would always hold this bat when he would have these meetings. The writers and the actors would be there, and he would have the bat in his hand. It was really very Al Capone-y.”

David, for his part, hated Ebersol for cutting so many of his sketches. He had also infuriated Ebersol in return by refusing to pull all-nighters on Tuesdays, the day where the show’s writers were expected to prepare sketch pitches for the Wednesday table reads. David quit SNL after one season, and Louis-Dreyfus quit the same year.

When it was time to cast Elaine five years later, the Seinfeld crew held perfunctory auditions for a wide range of actresses. Emperor of Nothing reveals Patricia Heaton, Wendie Malick, Rosie O’Donnell, and Megan Mullally as big names who auditioned. But David, who was familiar with Louis-Dreyfus’ comedic sensibilities from their time at SNL together, knew there was only one woman for the role. There was just one problem.

Louis-Dreyfus Was Committed To Another Show

In early 1990, Louis-Dreyfus had a major role in a sitcom called Day by Day, playing the main couple’s annoying neighbor. The show had wrapped up its second season in June 1989, and the third season spent an agonizingly long time stuck in development limbo.

“During that time, I kept bugging Julia’s manager,” recalled casting director Marc Hirschfeld. Her agent kept telling him, “It’s bad optics if my actress, who’s a series regular on a show, is coming in to meet for another series before it’s canceled.”

When NBC finally made Day by Day‘s cancellation official, Hirschfeld immediately set up a meeting. And although the meeting went great, with Louis-Dreyfus and Jerry Seinfeld hitting it off, she still hesitated to sign on to the show.

“[David] goes ‘Well, what do you think?…’ and I go, ‘Well, I don’t know…'” Louis-Dreyfus said. “Frankly what I didn’t say to him at the time was, ‘You know, I don’t know if this is the right move for me.'”

In Early 1990, ‘Seinfeld’ Did Not Seem Like a Safe Bet

It’s easy to forget today, but it really wasn’t until season 4 that the future of Seinfeld felt safe. The show struggled in the ratings for its short first season, only performing well enough to earn a half-season order for season 2.

Even when NBC ordered a full-length renewal for season 3, David wouldn’t inspire much confidence with his reaction. “All the good ideas were used up the year before!” he recalled thinking at the time. “How am I replacing those?!”

The Seinfeld pilot, the only episode aired before Louis-Dreyfus was asked to sign on, is also nearly unrecognizable to the show most fans know and love. The episode features far more Jerry stand-up than usual, George feels too much like Woody Allen, and the plot is incredibly slow-paced compared to the plots of later season episodes.

But even though Seinfeld didn’t quite become Seinfeld until late season 2, Louis-Dreyfus was impressed enough by those four season 1 scripts to be convinced to sign on.

“And once we got her,” Jerry Seinfeld said in the 2004 documentary Seinfeld: How it Began, “I was absolutely convinced from then on that nothing could really hurt this show. It really… it just felt like a balanced team.”
