The hits keep coming for comedian Shane Gillis as backlash over his sexist gym joke on last week’s Saturday Night Live continues. Now, SNL UK has taken a swipe at the controversy.
Gillis was widely criticized last week after his SNL monologue fell flat when he joked about returning to the gym and said, “I haven’t been to the gym in so long. I didn’t know women just dressed like whores now.” The remark drew a few nervous laughs from the audience, while the SNL house band, often seen laughing along during monologues, appeared unimpressed.
The backlash was swift, drawing criticism from SNL alum Ego Nwodim and Dan Levy. Meanwhile, Weekend Update co-anchor Michael Che, who was promoting his Netflix special, joked that the controversy would make press appearances a little tougher, since it was all anyone wanted to talk about.
Just as the dust began to settle, SNL UK couldn’t resist making Gillis the butt of a joke during its own Weekend Update segment. Anchor Ania Magliano discussed a ride operator in Germany who offered women shorts to wear on an attraction to prevent them from being “upskirted.”
“Wearing the gym shorts will protect women from being upskirted, but it does make them vulnerable to something much worse,” she said, as producers displayed a photo of Gillis.
“Last week on SNL, comedian Shane Gillis also caused controversy by dropping the F-bomb,” Magliano continued. “Oh, shame. You’re not allowed to say that, you stupid f—ing c—.”
The joke also sparked a fierce reaction on X, with some viewers praising SNL UK for taking a sharper shot at Gillis than its American counterpart, while others criticized the decision to platform misogyny. “Gotta love when snl uk fires back before our side even wraps the episode,” one user wrote. Another declared that Gillis was “never escaping that monologue.” Others were far less amused, arguing that the joke crossed a line amid ongoing concerns about sexism and male violence.
