Starfish Seafood Recalls Smoked Salmon Due to Listeria Risk ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Planning a bagel-and-lox brunch? You may want to take a closer look at that package of smoked salmon first.

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc., a Brooklyn-based wholesale distributor, is recalling Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The FDA posted the company’s announcement on Oct. 16. The problem was caught during routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, and no illnesses have been reported so far.

The salmon was sold frozen in 8-ounce (227-gram) vacuum-sealed packages in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia and Florida. Shoppers should look for UPC 4751048940099, lot code D080-148 and a best-before date written as 27.11.2027, which is the European format for Nov. 27, 2027. The product was made in Latvia, and the distributor says it did not manufacture it.

Here’s why the frozen part matters. Unlike many germs, listeria can survive freezing and even grow at refrigerator temperatures. A package that’s been sitting in your freezer isn’t necessarily safe just because it’s frozen.

For most healthy adults, a listeria infection may cause short-term symptoms like fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, stomach pain and diarrhea. It can be much more serious, and sometimes fatal, for young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. During pregnancy, it can cause miscarriage or stillbirth. That’s why health officials generally advise pregnant people to avoid refrigerated smoked seafood like lox unless it’s cooked into a dish.

Anyone who bought the recalled salmon shouldn’t eat it and can return it to the store for a full refund. Customers with questions can call Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. at (718) 858-6720, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.

With brunch season and holiday entertaining around the corner, it’s worth a quick look before that package makes it onto your bagel.
