Veteran actor Michael Douglas is opening up about a terrifying incident in which he could have lost his life.
While making an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, the 82-year-old actor recalled how some members of a cult threatened to kill him at a dinner party. The Oscar-winning actor mentioned the story while talking about his book, One Helluva Ride, during the interview.
Douglas stated that he had gone to the dinner with his girlfriend after the group had tried to get in touch with him; at dessert the hosts told him that he had not understood their message and that he would therefore have to be ‘eliminated’.
“They invited me for dinner, and then they said, ‘Well, with a lady friend,’ they said … ‘We’ve been trying to reach you.’ We got to dessert, and they said, ‘We’ve been trying to reach you, and you just don’t get it. You don’t get it. So, you’re going to have to be eliminated,'” Douglas recalled.
When Rogan asked what the group wanted, Douglas stated that they had expected him to join them and hand himself over to their cause. He remembered that there had been a long silence after he had asked if they had already made up their minds. According to him, they did acknowledge that they had.
“They were going to whack me. I remember there was a long silence, and I said, ‘Well, you’ve done it, haven’t you?’ And they said, ‘Yeah,’ … and a big, long pause. My girlfriend just started falling apart, peeing in her pants and all that,” the actor added.
Douglas stated that his girlfriend was terrified and that he thought they could be killed. He said that he had felt frozen, mentioning that even a sudden movement might have put him in danger. Nevertheless, the two of them were eventually permitted to leave.
The star referred to the group as consisting of followers of Mel Lyman, a musician and commune leader, and stated that he then informed the police. He also spoke about having lived in a commune in Santa Barbara during his younger years in the counterculture movement.
Douglas noted, “I’ve never had many experiences, but there’s numbness. … Kind of this whole numbness just comes over you, or it did in my case. Just was frozen.”
