Election officials debunk viral claim about poll workers writing on ballots ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A false social media rumor about poll workers writing on ballots is spreading online again.

As early voting gets underway, election officials are reminding voters the claim is not true.

Posts went viral on social media claiming that if a poll worker writes on a voter’s ballot, the ballot will be disqualified. Election officials in at least eight states, including Illinois, want to set the record straight.

“A congresswoman texted it to me and asked me was, ‘Is this true?’ and I’m like, “Absolutely not,'” said Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon.

Voters are asking Gordon about it, too.

She and other election officials across the country used their own social media channels to correct the years-old conspiracy theory. s falsely claim a voter should request a new ballot if a poll worker writes “a letter, a checkmark, a letter star, an R or a D.”

However, that’s false. In fact, clerks said election judges are required to initial a voter’s ballot before it’s placed in the tabulator.

Will County Clerk Annette Parker explained why the initials are necessary.

“If there’s a challenge or there’s any a race that people want to look at, if we have to pull those ballots and review them, if the initials are not on there, then that ballot will be disqualified,” Parker said.

Both clerks said correcting misinformation is a constant challenge.

“Between now and Election Day, even after Election Day, expect some false rumors on social media. Expect texts. But please, report them to us. Do not share them,” Gordon said.

If a voter hears a polling place has closed or their voting location has changed, they should verify it directly with their county clerk. Gordon encouraged voters to visit cookcountyclerk.com/trustedsource for more information.

“There is a lot of distrust with election officials and the process, but I will tell you that election officials take their job very seriously,” Gordon said.

To build trust in the process, she also encouraged voters to tour their local election operations center.

“We also encourage them to become election judges. That’s where you see the full process, everything from collecting the ballots to chain of custody procedures, and you get to see up close and personal everything that goes into the election process,” Gordon said.
