Family Farmstead Dairy Recalls Its Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese Due to E. Coli Scare ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Cheese lovers in New York and New Jersey should take a closer look at their fridges this weekend.

Family Farmstead Dairy, based in Worcester, New York, is recalling one lot of its Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese because it may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to a company announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Oct. 15. The cheese was distributed to grocery stores in both states.

The problem surfaced during routine testing in Maryland, where a lab sample found two strains of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli in two packages of Family Farmstead’s A2 Raw Cheddar. No illnesses have been reported so far.

The recalled cheese comes in clear plastic packaging with green, red and white labels on the front and back. Shoppers should look for the lot code and best-by date 7/22/27. No other Family Farmstead products are part of the recall.

E. coli O157:H7 can cause diarrhea, often bloody, and most healthy adults recover within about a week. However, some people develop hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure that can cause serious kidney damage or even death. Young children and older adults are most at risk.

The recall is also a reminder of why raw-milk products come with extra caution. Raw-milk cheese is made from milk that hasn’t been pasteurized, the heating process that kills harmful bacteria. Health officials have long warned that this makes it more likely to carry germs like E. coli, especially for kids, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a weakened immune system.

Anyone who bought the affected cheese should not eat it. Throw it away or return it to the store for a full refund. Customers with questions can call Family Farmstead Dairy at (607) 397-4044 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or email customerservice@familyfarmsteaddairy.com.

In a statement, the company apologized for the inconvenience. It said it is working to identify the cause and take corrective action. Until then, the safest move is a quick fridge check before your next cheese board.
