BATH, N.Y. — A man, 61, is facing new charges after Steuben County sheriff’s deputies say he tried to escape from the county’s jail on Tuesday.
James Racalto of Bath is accused of trying to bribe a corrections officer to release him. Deputies say he also “created a distraction” in his jail unit and tried to escape while officers were responding to the report of an emergency.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies quickly took Racalto back into custody, and he never left the secure area of the jail. Racalto is charged with Felony attempted escape, along with resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.
Racalto was arraigned and taken back to Steuben County in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.
