A fall storm system with periods of “soaking rainfall,” thunder and winds gusting as high as 40 mph will move into the Chicago area Thursday, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.
The system will also bring much colder temperatures, NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Iisha Scott said, with winds making conditions feel as cold as 40 degrees and frost possible.
“If you’ve plants or sensitive vegetation outside, you’ll want to bring that inside before Saturday morning,” Scott said.
Early Thursday morning, Live Doppler 5 Radar picked up some sprinkles scattered across the Chicago area.
“Anything that falls will be fairly light,” Scott said.
By noon, heavier and more widespread rain will push through the area. Steady rain will continue through the evening, Scott said, though some areas will see breaks at times.
About 5 p.m., forecast models showed heavy pockets of rain in the northern and northwestern counties, as well as to the southeast and in northwest Indiana.
Overnight, showers will start to wind down, Scott said. More light, scattered rain could develop Friday afternoon.
Temperature drop
Temperatures will remain in the 60s Thursday, Scott said. By Friday, they’ll take a sharp drop into the low 50s, though wind gusts will make things feel more like the 40s.
Lows overnight into Saturday will fall to the upper 30s, though temperatures could drop below freezing to the west, bringing the potential for the season’s first frost in some areas.
“Widespread frost is expected Friday night into Saturday across northern Illinois away from Lake Michigan,” the National Weather Service said.
Temperatures will stay chilly over the weekend, with highs in the 50s and low 60s, before gradually rising back up, inching close to 70 by the end of next week.
