Red Cross disaster training

With hurricane season underway, the American Red Cross is holding an event in Rochester on Wednesday to train volunteers to help people impacted by disasters.

The Volunteer Boot Camp is taking place from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Greater Rochester Chapter on 825 John St. in Henrietta. The Red Cross is encouraging people to sign up if they’re interested in disaster response, shelter operations, community outreach, logistics, health services, or mental health support. You can sign up here. The Red Cross is also seeking licensed health and mental health professionals, including physicians, nurses, EMTs, and paramedics.

The training event comes after Hurricane Isaias slammed the Florida Panhandle and Alabama over the weekend, with at least four deaths linked to the storm. The Red Cross has helped with storm relief by opening or supporting 21 evacuation centers across Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama.

You can learn more about how local Red Cross volunteers have stepped up in News10NBC’s Jennifer Lewke’s story here.

Zoning overhaul meeting

A series of meetings continues on Wednesday to allow the public to weigh in on plans to overhaul Rochester’s zoning laws for the first time since 2003.

Rochester City Council members are hosting the meetings to discuss the Zoning Alignment Project, which city leaders say is a key part of Rochester’s 2034 comprehensive plan. The latest meeting will take place on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Olmstead Lodge at Highland Park. This meeting will focus on the South District. The discussion will be led by City Council Vice President LaShay Harris, who represents the South District.

Rochester City Council plans to vote on the zoning plan as soon as November. There will also be two official hearings on the zoning alignment project. Here are the dates.

Ribbon-cutting for courts at Perinton Park

The Town of Perinton will cut the ribbon on major renovations to the tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts at Perinton Park on Wednesday. The ceremony gets underway at 11:30 a.m. at the park on 99 O’Connor Rd.

The park will now offer four resurfaced tennis courts, six new dedicated pickleball courts, and a resurfaced basketball court. Town officials say they made the upgrades because of cracking and deterioration and gathered feedback from the community to guide the project.
